Tour of Missouri 2009 funding threatened
Submitted by MoBikeFed Admin on Thu, 07/09/2009 - 1:48am
Today numerous newspapers are covering a threat to remove $1.5 million in state funding for the Tour of Missouri 2009.
The Tour's 2009 budget had already been approved by the legislature, signed by the Governor, and approved by the Missouri Tourism Commission--so we had thought the Tour funding was safe for this year.
Guess not!
This is a time when lots of people speaking up in favor of the Tour will really make a HUGE difference.
When it comes to budget cuts, programs with no public support will be cut--no matter how beneficial they are.

So the Governor needs to hear that there is plenty of public support for the Tour:

Message: I support the Tour of Missouri. Please continue funding the Tour for 2009.
- The Tour brings in $30 for every dollar spent.
- The Tour brings in more state tax revenue that it costs.
- The Tour gives Missouri positive publicity--as a progressive and "cool" place to visit and live--on an international stage.
- Canceling the Tour at this late stage will cost almost as much in cancelled contracts--and certainly in ill will from sponsors, visitors, and host cities--as it would save.
- The Tour is the most visible and high-profile event representing Missouri's commitment to promote active transportation and recreation and become a better, safer state for walking and bicycling. Governor Nixon should support that effort rather than undermining it.
