Kansas City Active Transportation Program Coordinator

The Missouri Foundation for Bicycling and Walking is seeking a program manager to run three new programs:

  • Statewide Safe Routes to School Promotion
  • Car-Free Commuter Options
  • Bicycle Education
Successful applicants will have to be able to work successfully with minimal supervision, to create and run these programs.  Applicants must have personal experience with and a passion for active transportation. We prefer to hire one full-time individual for all three programs, but will also consider part-time hires for specific programs.

Existing grants fund these programs for the initial 18-24 months; part of the program manager's responsibility will be to help the organization develop sources of funding to continue these or similar programs, so that this position can be continued beyond this initial funding.

1. Safe Routes to School - Missouri, state-wide. Promote Missouri Walk to School month statewide.  Produce Safe Routes newsletter, e-newsletter, and web page for Missouri Safe Routes community. Oversee creation and editing of Missouri Safe Routes to School Guidebook.

2. Car-Free Commuter Options - Kansas City metro area. Organize and coordinate annual Bike Week programs.  Oversee year-round commuter options encouragement programs.

3. Bicycle Education - Kansas City metro area. Conduct monthly bicycle education and road skills clinics.

Required Qualifications
  • Proven ability to build partnerships with schools and governmental agencies
  • Keen attention to details
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills; excellent facilitation, conflict resolution, and presentation skills
  • Ability to envision a program that does not yet exist, create it, and effectively run it from start to finish
  • A knack for producing great results with limited resources
  • Excellent public speaking skills and ability to lead group meetings
  • Personal interest in and commitment to the type of transportation modes being promoted; willingness to adapt your own life and work routines to consistently use and actively model the transportation modes these programs promote
  • Ability to represent the organization in the broader community and relevant bike/ped organizations
  • Strong goal setting, project planning, budget management, organization, and follow-through skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to cultivate, motivate and maintain effective working relationships with staff and volunteers from diverse backgrounds and all organizational levels
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed
  • League Cycling Instructor (LCI) certification preferred; equivalent experience and skills and willingness to gain LCI certification required
  • Writing, editing, and communications skills
  • Internet skills--ability to use or quickly learn to use standard tools such as Google Docs and blog software, post and maintain content using standard Content Management Systems, etc.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency
Preferred Qualifications
  • College degree, particularly in a related field
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations, bicycle/pedestrian organizations, fund raising, or other fields related to this position
Safe Routes to School Qualifications
  • Experience or certification with national Safe Routes to School program
  • Ability to conduct outreach activities across the state of Missouri
  • Experience working in or with school settings
Duties
  • Planning public events, programs, etc.
  • Locating funding sources for these and similar future programs; write and edit grant applications
  • Public speaking
  • Planning and leading meetings
  • Raising money and sponsorships
  • Managing diverse tasks
  • Detailed tracking and reporting of time worked and tasks completed
  • Writing and supervising the production of newsletters (print and online)
  • Finding, organizing, and working with volunteers
  • Managing professional services vendors
  • Finding, hiring, and managing intern
  • Communicating with schools, bike clubs, government agencies, and other community groups and individuals
Significant portions of work will occur in April-May and September-October.  Availability will be especially important during these times.

Compensation
This is an independent contractor position. No benefits are offered. Hourly rate will range from $16.27 to $20.34 per hour, depending on qualifications, for up to 2000 hours per year. Total compensation will depend upon how many of the three program areas the applicant is assigned to.

Duration
The position is grant funded for up to eighteen months. A longer term may be possible if future funding is secured.

Location
This position is based in the Kansas City, MO metro area and will require travel within the metro, preferably by active transportation whenever possible.
