Missouri's Ozark Trail becoming a national treasure
Missouri's Ozark Trail is becoming a national treasure. The Daily Journal writes:
The Ozark Trail, which traverses southeast and south-central Missouri, is quickly gaining recognition as one of the most beautiful and accessible trails of its type in the U.S. In the past decade, largely through an organization composed of volunteers committed to the trail's growth and preservation, the trail has gained the attention of outdoor enthusiast across North America and beyond. . . .
The vision or ultimate goal of the trail is to connect Castlewood State Park to the Arkansas border. At the Arkansas border the trail will link to the Arkansas Ozark Highlands trail to create a 700-mile through-trail across the Ozark mountains.
As the trail is now, a traveler could begin at the northern terminus of the trail at Onondaga State Park and effectively walk on what is known as the "spine" of the trail to the southern terminus near the Eleven Point River, approximately 30 miles from the Arkansas border.
Find out more about the trail on the Ozark Trail Association web site.
Creating a world-class bicycle, pedestrian, and trails network in Missouri is one of the top objectives of MoBikeFed's Vision for Bicycling and Walking in Missouri, as is creating a movement in support of bicycling, walking, and trails in Missouri, and supporting those organizations like the Ozark Trail Association that help make that network a reality. MoBikeFed helps support the efforts of groups liek the Ozark Trail Association by playing the lead role in Missouri in supporting and defending federal and state funding sources for trails, like the Recreational Trail program mentioned in the article above, and in helping support development of funding for bicycling, walking, and trails in major state initiatives like the proposed $8 billion Missouri transportation funding initiative.
