Safer People, Safer Streets is new national challenge from Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx for cities to step up efforts to make walking and biking easier and safer ways to get around for transportation, recreation, and fitness. BikeWalkKC applauds the newer and stronger commitment to safety from Mayor James and City staff across departments that include Public Works, Parks and Recreation, City Planning, City Manger’s Office, and more.
Mayor Sly James and KC Chamber CEO Jim Heeter

The Mayor’s Challenge comes at a time when Kansas City is beginning to gain momentum towards becoming bikeable and walkable. Recent City initiatives include investing millions of dollars in new trails and bike lanes, a Livable Streets policy, new crosswalk policy, integration of bike/ped into the KC Stat performance dashboard, an update to the Bike KC plan, inclusion of bike/ped in new neighborhood plans, and city-wide study of opportunities for road diets. The City supports many BikeWalkKC programs like Kansas City B-cycle bike sharing, Safe Routes to School, and Bike Month.
