During a committee hearing last week, fellow senators raised intelligent questions about his bill. Questions included whether ignoring the potential new law carried enough of a penalty. The penalty, Pearce agreed, could expand from the proposed simple infraction that takes two points off of a driver’s license. Instead, the state could add a more serious penalty – one that matches the existing punishment for careless and imprudent driving. Careless and imprudent driving can carry a penalty of up to a year in jail, if a wreck is involved.
People on roads every day are seen texting and driving, and holding cell phones while driving. They do not police themselves. They put their lives and the lives of others at risk.
The need to ban that bad behavior is clear.
Senate Bill 3 should pass for public safety.
