SMH? Texting, driving ban hits roadblock | News OK

Some questions seemed geared to take the air out of the tires of legislation to expand the texting-and-driving ban to all Missourians, and requiring only hands-free cell phones.

Other questions drove home points of support, including a potential decrease in traffic injuries and deaths. . . .

Before a Senate hearing room packed tightly, with many left standing, Pearce started out in the driver’s seat by providing committee members with statistics, including that those who text a drive are 23 percent more likely to become involved in a wreck.

“If you text, it’s almost like closing your eyes for five seconds,” Pearce said, which on the road is more than enough time to get into a wreck.

Pearce said he once, like others, would send and take texts while driving. But one day his son, Andrew, made an astute observation: “My son told me, ‘Dad, you’re going to die.’” . . .

Testifying for the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation, Jim Farrell said he supports the ban because there has been an 8 percent increase in the number of bicyclists and pedestrians killed by drivers.
