MoBikeFed comment: Much more about the new Carthage bicycle lanes and routes here:Shelfer says the bike lanes offer more benefits to bicyclists than just a space to ride.
"For health reasons, clean air reasons, for an alternative mode of transportation, and creating more interconnectivity between the different roads here in town," said Shelfer.
Shelfer believes the new bike lanes will offer a unique experience for tourists.
"I drive down a historic street, Grand Avenue. It's one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Carthage. And to enjoy it at that speed makes me think, 'well, what if somebody came in from out of town and brought their bike and rode the same route?' They would see what I see," said Shelfer.
Shelfer says there are around 25 miles of designated and shared bike lanes throughout the city. Phase three will be coming soon, which will add even more bike lanes.
