A 6-½-foot median on College Avenue now divides MU and housing on East Campus.

The median in the current center left turn lane on College Avenue runs between University Avenue and Rollins Street. The project aims to funnel pedestrians to the crosswalks and discourage jaywalking.

Construction on the median was accomplished over the summer and will mean a change for students returning for the fall semester.

Students walking to class from their homes on East Campus are accustomed to crossing four lanes of oncoming traffic and vehicles traveling at a fast pace.

There have been at least 20 reports of pedestrian-vehicle accidents on College Avenue from June 2005 to September 2012.

"The goal is to improve safety for pedestrians crossing College, primarily students," said City Councilman Ian Thomas.
