MoBikeFed comment: Like Columbia's College Avenue, National is a busy four-lane road with fast-moving traffic that borders a university and has heavy pedestrian demand to cross the street.A pedestrian who was hit by a vehicle late Tuesday night was still in critical condition on Wednesday afternoon. . . .
People who live and work in the area say it's common for students and other pedestrians to cross in the middle of National, into oncoming traffic. Samson Latchison, the manager at nearby Potters House coffee shop, says he sees it happen all the time, and is guilty of doing it himself because it's more convenient. He said he'll now think twice before crossing without using a crosswalk.
"Honestly, the median is kind of a midpoint to dash and wait for the rest of the traffic to pass, and then you cross on over," said Latchison.

Like College Avenue, officials try to erect fences and channel pedestrian traffic. But the only real long-range way to improve safety for all road users is to implement Vision Zero principles and slow traffic speed dramatically. With those measures in place, the road can still carry the needed traffic while still remaining safe for all users in the area.
