St. Joseph is seeking a designation tied to an increasingly popular form of recreation and transportation.

The city is working toward becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community, a designation offered through The League of American Bicyclists.

Nancy Taylor, health educator for the St. Joseph Health Department, said the designation could help St. Joseph in a variety of areas.

“It can help with economic development, it can help with tourism, it can just help with quality of life,” she said. “A lot of the other cities in Missouri that are our size or bigger are working toward or have achieved some of the designations of a Bicycle Friendly Community, so we thought it’s something St. Joe should look at doing, too.”
