The change will put some distance between drivers and the thousands of college students who pour onto OTC’s campus when classes begin, Chancellor Hal Higdon said.

“I worry every day. When school starts, the traffic on Central goes up drastically,” he said. “We’ve had people who pop out between cars. We’ve had people hit, we’ve had people almost hit.”

The plan to close Central to drivers has been in the works for some time. Citing traffic congestion and safety concerns, OTC proposed turning Central into a pedestrian walkway as part of the college’s 2010 master plan.
