MoBikeFed comment: Preservation of the MKT Bridge at Boonville and incorporation of the bridge as part of the Katy Trail has long been an issue that we have worked to support. The city of Boonville, the Katy Bridge Coalition, Governor Nixon, and many others involved in acquiring and preserving the bridge have done an amazing job in turning this story around since 2005, when it appeared the bridge was set for removal and destruction.A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Saturday morning in Boonville to celebrate the first phase of the Katy Trail railroad bridge restoration project.
Governor Jay Nixon assisted with the ribbon cutting and spoke at the event.
The restoration project includes adding handrails and lighting to the trail, as well as a new span over the existing railroad tracks and concrete floor.
In 2005, the bridge was at risk of being taken down and removed.
