Parks & trails supporters invited to Gov Nixon's announcement about State Parks Sales Tax renewal, Mon May 9th, 1:30pm in St Charles
UPDATE: Time for Monday's press conference has been changed to 1:30pm (previously the time was 2:30pm).
Governor Nixon will be making a major announcement Monday, May 9th, 1:30pm regarding the Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax at the Katy Trail State Park trailhead in St. Charles, MO (Jaycee Stage in Frontier Park).
We're encouraging folks from the area who support the Katy Trail, the Rock Island Trail, and our state parks system to bike on over and join Governor Nixon for this event. The Parks, Soils, and Water Sales Tax, up for renewal in November 2016, provides major support for the Katy Trail, the forthcoming Rock Island Trail, and hundreds of miles of trails in state parks across Missouri.
Renewal of this tax in November is absolutely vital for maintaining and expanding our state's trail system.
Half of this tax goes directly to Missouri State Parks. This provides approximately 75% of State Parks annual budget--and all of the State Parks budget provided from state funds.
More about Monday's event:
On May 9th, Governor Nixon will be making a major announcement regarding the Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax which is up for renewal in 2016.
The primary source of funding for the state park system is half of the dedicated constitutional tax of one-tenth-of-one-percent parks, soils and water sales tax, which provides about three-fourths of the division's budget for operation and development of state parks. All additional funding comes from revenues generated in the state park system and some federal funds.
The parks, soils and water tax was created through a constitutional amendment and earmarked specifically for the state park system and efforts to stop soil erosion. The tax was first approved by voters in 1984, and has since been reapproved by voters three times in 1988, 1996 and 2006. Two-thirds of voters approved the tax the last three times, showing how much Missouri voters support their state park system.
The event will be held at the Katy Trail State Park in St. Charles, MO located at the Jaycee Stage in Frontier Park beginning at 1:30 pm.
