Springfield man charged with hitting bicyclist while driving drunk, speeding away

A man from Springfield is accused of running a red light, severely injuring a bicyclist, and then speeding away. Jeffrey Maloney, 40, is charged with second-degree assault and leaving the scene of a crash.

The crash was shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday, June 10, at the intersection of Kimbrough Avenue at Sunshine Street. Witnesses said the bicyclist, Kevin Fisher, 44, was southbound on Kimbrough when a westbound pickup ran a red light and hit him.

A witness followed Maloney, who turned south on Roanoke Avenue. A detective says the witness pulled in front of Maloney’s pickup to stop him, demanded his keys, and detained him until police arrived. Officers arrested Maloney on suspicion of driving while impaired. At the jail, police say, his blood alcohol level was .227 percent; the legal limit for drivers is .08 percent.
