With the Windsor to Chilhowee section of the Rock Island Trail scheduled to open later this summer, state parks crews are constructing a trail head in Leeton.

Leeton Mayor Taylor Elwell said the trail head should be completed later this year and will include flush restrooms, information kiosks, benches and a parking lot that will accommodate horse trailers.

“We’ll have a full trail head facility,” Elwell said.

The trail between Windsor and Pleasant Hill will be open to equestrian use as well as bicycles and pedestrians.

MoBikeFed comment: Work is now going on all up and down the Rock Island corridor. Missouri State Parks is preparing the 47 miles between Pleasant Hill and Windsor for an opening date later this year--they have indicated at date of December 31st, 2016, and the work may not be finished any earlier than that.

Meanwhile, salvage crews are working at full speed on the 155-mile section between Windsor and Beaufort. We would like to see salvage work completed and the interim trail agreement signed before the end of this year, but it could easily take longer than that.
