Mayor Taylor Elwell told The Daily Star-Journal earlier that the tax could help develop amenities at the city park to complement the Rock Island Trail. Amenities could include camping and shower facilities and food and drink vending machines.
“It’s a huge opportunity for us,” Elwell said, because the park is within sight of the trail and could draw in travelers.
Elwell estimated the tax would raise $12,000 to $15,000 annually, which could be used as matching funds for grant applications.
It is great to see cities like Leeton embracing the Rock Island Trail and help to integrate it with their communities.
This section of Rock Island Trail State Park--from Windsor (on the Katy Trail) to Pleasant Hill is currently under construction and Missouri State Parks Director Bill Bryan and Governor Nixon have promised that the trail will open by December 31st, 2016.
