Construction plans for a proposed trail that have been in the works for years finally are moving forward.

The city of Joplin received notice in early August from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that it can proceed with a trail that will connect the campus of Missouri Southern State University to Northpark Mall, according to Nick Heatherly, the city's public works director.

The trail, which will be about 2,000 feet of paved walkway, will start near Southern's tennis courts and lead to the parking lot near the movie theater in the mall compound, Heatherly said.

MoBikeFed comment: Joplin is yet another Missouri community that has gradually been developing a trail system, sidewalk system, and citywide bike plan system. These systems take years to develop and completely connect, but the benefit to the communities they serve is tremendous.
