Pineville man to mark 83rd birthday with 83-mile bicycle ride | joplinglobe.com

When Doyle Herrin turned 60, he set out to do something that a local bike shop owner described as, in a word, “nuts.”

“My plan was to ride 100 miles on my mountain bike,” Herrin said. “He said no one rides a mountain bike 100 miles in a day.”

Herrin left Joplin and rode south to Camp Crowder, taking back roads near the land his grandfather homesteaded. He made it to Seneca, then returned to Neosho and headed south to his home near Pineville.

“A tremendous wind brought me to a stop,” Herrin recalled. “So I ended up with 90 miles.”

While he fell a bit short of his goal, he saw the ride as a success. It was the starting point of a unique birthday tradition.
