The Carthage City Council voted 7-0, with two members absent and one vacant seat, to approve a change order that will complete the bike lanes project by adding 7.8 miles of shared lanes, featuring the silhouette of a bicycle and chevrons, or arrows, on city streets, mostly in the north part of the city.

The change order will cost the city $38,475.44, putting the total cost of 20.9 miles of shared bike lanes and 2.8 miles of dedicated bike lanes at $116,525.60.

That's much lower than the more than $210,000 officials originally expected the project to cost when it was proposed two years ago.
