Columbia city council prioritizes pedestrian safety projects; area where visiting scholar killed a top priority - KMIZ

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

The top project is a sidewalk along Carter lane in south Columbia. It's near the spot where a visiting scholar, Kui Zou, was hit and killed while walking on Providence Road nearly two years ago.

It was one death of many in 2015 that spurred the task force on pedestrian safety. But that area hasn't seen any work since her death.

Carter Lane features several apartment and duplexes just off it, with dedicated Mizzou bus routes running along the stretch without a sidewalk for bikes of walkers.

MoBikeFed comment: The City of Columbia is doing the right thing after a rash of pedestrian injuries and fatalities--identifying specific measures it can take to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, and undertaking both systematic change and specific projects to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians.

Kudos to the city and to city and community leaders for making these important changes.

One of the major initiatives Columbia has undertaken is Missouri's first Vision Zero project, which is a fundamentally new approach to eliminating roadway fatalities of all kinds. Find out more about Vision Zero on PedNet's Vision Zero page:
