Work in Kennett & Holcomb to update sidewalks to ADA standards; Kudos to @MoDOT | Daily Dunklin Democrat

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Crews across Dunklin County continue work on sidewalk projects with hopes of finishing before their expected completion date of Nov. 1. Work continues in Kennett on Independence Avenue, while a separate crew adds a new sidewalk along Church Street in Holcomb. . . .

Such access areas, like curb ramps, are included on the new sidewalks around Kennett. In Holcomb, the new sidewalk replaces the walk way that had nearly disappeared under dirt and grass along Church Street. Wyman says MoDOT is required to restore that sidewalk, and the agency is doing so as part of a 10-year "transition plan" aimed at providing access to areas across a district spanning 25 counties.

MoBikeFed comment: Encouraging MoDOT to make sidewalks accessible for people with disabilities, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been one of our priorities with MoDOT.

And MoDOT has made some very positive progress on this issue. In 2010, MoDOT made a major update to its ADA Transition Plan, which you and view here:

Since that time, MoDOT sidewalk installations have been ADA compliant and the agency has made regular progress in updating existing sidewalks to ADA standards.

The sidewalk upgrades in Dunklin County are just one example of the work MoDOT is doing in this area.

Of course, much work remains to be done, and many MoDOT roads in populated areas still lack sidewalks altogether.

Nevertheless: Kudos and thanks to MoDOT for some real progress in this area
