Bicyclists on the Rock Island Trail through southern Johnson County find stretches too rocky to navigate . . .

Spirit Trails Coalition member John Nold, Warrensburg, said he tried to ride the trail on his mountain bike starting at Highway 2 east of Leeton about a month ago. He said “coarse gravel,” some pieces up to 2 inches in diameter, that prevented bike stability.

“I turned around and went west,” Nold said, finding smaller gravel. “It was chat for a while.”

He later encountered manageable gravel. . . .

Missouri State Parks spokeswoman Steph Deidrick said the Rock Island, a spur of the Katy Trail, is designed to allow for equestrian use, hiking and biking. She said horses on other areas of the Katy Trail resulted in higher instances of damage and additional maintenance.

“In an effort to address this concern on the Rock Island Spur, surface rock that is larger than what is typical on other areas of the Katy Trail was used,” Deidrick said. “The specific material that was used was a ¾ minus gravel.”

The parks division has heard comments from bicyclists about inconsistency in trail surfacing, she said, but overall feedback is positive.

MoBikeFed comment: The 47-mile section of the Rock Island Trail connecting the Katy Trail to Pleasant Hill, opened to the public in December 2016. As the article points out, many details of the trail are still underway, including construction of trailheads.

It sounds as though some issues with trail surface still need to be resolved. We would appreciate any first-hand reports for people using the trail.
