The St. Joseph School District is working with the city to expand the hike and bike trail system.

The district transferred land to the city last week to accommodate the construction of a new section of trail along the north side of Mark Twain Elementary and Truman Middle schools.

The new stretch of trail will follow an old railroad bed from an existing path near Parkway A on the west to 36th street on the east.

The city is building the new trail as part of a multi-phase project called the Patee Trail Branch. City officials previously said they believe the path will open up the neighborhood, providing children with safe access to both schools and to locations like the Aquatic Park to the west.
