SLU Grand/West Pine pedestrian crossing in St. Louis to be enhanced for safety : SLU

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

To enhance pedestrian safety at Grand and West Pine Boulevards, Saint Louis University is moving forward with a streetscape project that combines both safety and aesthetic improvements.

The project is tied to SLU’s campus master plan. Enhancing the safety of the very busy crossing was identified as a priority during the community engagement phase of the campus master planning process.

The new crossing will feature:

* A wider median that can more safely accommodate pedestrians waiting for the light to change
* Additional lighting and improved traffic signals
* Bollards placed along the median and sidewalks to prevent cars from encroaching into those areas

Leading up to the enhanced crossing, the road surface on Grand will be modified so drivers hear an audible cue to slow down.

MoBikeFed comment: Currently Grand is a busy, 5-lane road with heavy, fast traffic. Numerous pedestrians cross at this point every day. The streetscape enhancements will make a big difference for pedestrian access and safety.
