Callaway County is working to make trails safer after a deadly crash at a crossing between the Katy Trail and a county road in July 2025. . . .

On July 24, 2025, a pickup truck struck and killed a 9-year-old boy in the 12000 block of County Road 391. The boy was crossing County Road 391 at the Katy Trail when the truck hit him, according to the Jefferson City Police Department. . . .

The speed limit on County Road 391 is 35 mph and goes down to 20 mph 130 feet from each side of the Katy Trail — but there are no speed limit signs posted on either side of the road. . . .

The crash caused immediate change, with meetings between Boone County and Callaway County to discuss and develop a plan for providing road signage at Katy Trail crossings on county-maintained roads.

Since the crash, vegetation on both sides of the bridge has been cut back, and it's easier to see oncoming vehicles. . . .

The crossing has had a stop sign for cyclists, but there are still no signs for cars approaching the trail.

Callaway County requested a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation Central Region Safety Coalition for signage, which costs around $7,500. The grant would fund signage for all Katy Trail crossings in Callaway County on both sides of the road.
