Drivers are leaving the scene of fatal pedestrian crashes in Missouri at twice the rate they did a decade ago, according to new research.

The sharpest increases happened in Kansas City and St. Louis.

“For a lot of folks, it’s life or death,” said Eric Rogers, executive director of BikeWalk KC.

Rogers said the organization hears from family members of people who have been hit and killed, and it is often a hit-and-run.

“It’s traumatizing for family members,” Rogers said.
