As it so happens, I'm not the only one optimistic about Kansas City's second annual Bicycle Commuter Challenge, which is set for May 17-21.

Andy Graham also was quite cheery when I reached him at the Mid-America Regional Council, which co-sponsors the event with Kansas City Corporate Challenge.

“I'm shooting high,” Graham said. “My goal is 1,000.”

A thousand miles? That's incredible, Andy. The best performance recorded by an individual biker over five days in last year's inaugural commuter challenge was Adrian O'Hara's 238.5 miles.

But no, what Graham actually has in mind is not riding 1,000 miles. He hopes to persuade 1,000 of us to participate this year. . . .

Start planning on it now. Dust off the two-wheeler and have it checked out at your local bike shop. Buy a helmet, if you don't already own one. Then sign up as an individual competitor or as a team by following the links at www.marc.org/bcc.

The registration deadline is May 10.
