What has MoBikeFed done for YOU lately?
Submitted by Brent Hugh on Sun, 05/22/2005 - 6:17pm
What has MoBikeFed done for you in the past half year or so?
- Passed the first bicycle safety legislation in Missouri in 10 years. (Now awaiting the Governor's signature.)
- Supported bicycle education, including bicycle classes in the schools and the first League Cycling Instructor course in Missouri in seven years.
- Helped make the "Katy Trail Connection" to Kansas City a campaign issue in the Missouri governor's race. Helped galvanize local and regional support for a truly cross-state Katy Trail.
- Met with Missouri's Director of Tourism to develop a plan to improve and increase bicycle tourism in Missouri. Met with MoDOT Director Pete Rahn to advocate making MoDOT roads and policies more bicycle friendly.
- Lobbied against the "no bicycle zone" law in Lawson, MO, and for more accurate and informed news coverage of bicycle-motorist collisions in Kansas City, MO.
- Helped with the campaign to save the MK&T; railroad bridge at Boonville for Katy Trail use. Led a campaign that led MoDOT to start planning a safe bike/ped Missouri River crossing in Kansas City.
- Gave input in favor of bicycle access across rural freeway interchanges.
- Supported the St. Louis Regional Bicycle and Walking Plan
- Worked with MoDOT to support a statewide bike-friendly drain grate policy (finally near adoption after many years of work by many people).
- Worked with MoDOT to create and distribute a second draft of the cross-state bicycle map for public comment. (The map can be viewed or printed here.)
- Worked with MoDOT to create a more bicycle-friendly rumble strip policy (a compromise policy, better than the current policy, is near adoption)
MoBikeFed is beginning to achieve some real powerful bicycle advocacy in Missouri.
But to continue and expand this advocacy, we need our grass roots membership to be equally strong.
An advocacy organization with many members is powerful.
Be a part of it--help us take Missouri where it needs to go:
