Safe Kids Kansas receives national award

Patricia Sanders, widow of Dr. Robert Sanders of Murfreesboro (1927-2006), presented the first annual Dr. Robert Sanders Award for Outstanding Public Policy Achievement in Child Passenger Safety on October 19 on behalf of Safe Kids Worldwide in recognition of exceptional legislative achievements in the prevention of vehicle-related accidental injury to children. . . .Safe Kids Coalitions are also very involved in Safe Routes to Schools programs around Missouri, Kansas, and the nation.
The first annual Dr. Robert Sanders Award for Outstanding Public Policy Achievement in Child Passenger Safety will honor Safe Kids Kansas, a coalition of safety advocacy groups led by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, for its success in getting a booster seat law passed to require appropriate safety restraints for children up to 8 years old who weigh less than 80 pounds or are less than 4 feet, 9 inches tall. The new law was signed in March, less than three months after Dr. Sanders died.
Safe Kids Kansas used child passenger safety advocacy grants provided by Safe Kids Worldwide and General Motors to work for passage of the state's booster seat legislation. Nationally, GM provides approximately $50,000 each year for Safe Kids coalitions to work for improvements in state child passenger safety laws. Overall,
the Safe Kids Buckle Up program has been supported by more than $50 million from GM over the past 10 years.
