Springfield moving to adopt comprehensive bicycle plan

Springfield, Missouri, has historically had one of the strongest bicycle plans of any city in Missouri. Springfield has a written bicycle plan, many miles of bicycle routes in place around the city, and the goal of having the most miles of trail per capital of any city in the U.S.

Springfield holds "Honorable Mention" Bicycle Friendly Community status--currently the highest-rated Missouri city in the national Bicycle Friendly Community program.

However, for about the past four years, the on-street portion of Springfield's plan has been treading water. No knew bicycle routes, lanes, or markings have been put down in recent years.

Thanks to a concerted effort by the Advocacy Committee of SpringBike, the support of Ozark Greenways, and the support and work of Springfield City staff, the city is now poised to move forward with a new, comprehensive, very detailed and well-thought-out bicycle plan.

The plan is scheduled to go to the Springfield City Council for a vote in mid-January.

The proposed bicycle plan is available online (PDF file).
