Bicycle Friendly Springfield brings out nearly 100 cyclists to city hall
Bruce Adib-Yazdi of Springfield's STAR Team summarized last night's Bicycle Friendly Community ceremony before the Springfield City Council:
Last night was a momentous occasion at City Hall.
Many of you were there - along with somewhere in the neighborhood of 75-100 other cyclists. The city manager introduced Dr. Rob Schraft to speak on our behalf, and he did a GREAT job commending city and staff for their help in the BFC Award, and outlining the need for continued effort to reach next level of BFC. We presented council with a petetion of 1600 signatures supporting safe cycling, and development of bike lanes, sharrows, trails and other related bike facilities.
When City manager introduced Rob, there was a round of applause - and Greg Burris noted it was the biggest applause he has ever rec'd! Councilwoman Reshefsky pointed out that she would appreciate our help in educating cyclists on the rules of the road. And Councilman Burlison waned to know what it would take to reach the next level. Mayor Protem, Dan Chiles was presiding and commented that the upcoming 1/4 cent tax renewal has $400,000 allocated to bike route facilities. And that we can help by getting the vote out.
Thank you to you ALL for what you have done to get us to this point, which is just a starting point. You are all an amazing group of people. A special shout out to Terry, Natasha, Coy, David and Andy for pulling together a bulk of the BFC application. Chris, thanks for the work on the petetion, and getting Dr. Schraft to speak - he did an outstanding job.
Springfield has become Missouri's third Bicycle Friendly Community.
That is thanks to the work of the STAR Team, organized by Ozark Greenways, Bicycle Friendly Springfield, SpringBike, and a number of other organizations and individuals in the Springfield area working for a more bicycle friendly city.
MoBikeFed's Vision is 5 Bicycle Friendly Communities in Missouri and 5 more working towards that designation by 2012.
