National Bike Summit 2010: What we're asking for

The agenda items for this year's National Bike Summit have been finalized.

The most important day of the Summit is Thursday, March 11th, when delegates from all states who have gathered in Washington, DC, for the Summit meet with members of Congress and their staff members.

In Missouri, we have scheduled meetings with every congressional office.

Several national organizations are planning a coordinated email/call-in day for March 11th--so please stay tuned for more info as that day draws closer!

So what will we be asking for in our Congressional visits and on the advocacy day March 11th?

Summary of the things we are asking them to support:

  1. Active Community Transportation Act of 2010, H.R. 4722
Provide for a comprehensive program to address bicycle and pedestrian connectivity in our cities and towns; an extension of the successful Nonmotorized Pilot Project program (for which Columbia, MO, was one of four communities nationally selected)

  2. S. 584/H.R. 1443 - The Complete Streets Act of 2009
Incorporate bicycling, walking, and design for all ages and abilities of users routinely in every transportation project receiving federal funds; more info at CompleteStreets.org

  3. S. 1156 - The Safe Routes to School Program Reauthorization Act & H.R. 4021 - The Safe Routes to High Schools Act
Continue and expand the successful Safe Routes to School program that provides for safe ways for students to walk and bicycle to school, and encourages more children to do so.

  4.  H.R. 3734 - Urban Revitalization and Livable Communities Act
Funding for creating and improving urban parks and trails--a program that has been unfunded since 2001

  5. Ask  members to join the Congressional Bike Caucus
Current Missouri members of the Congressional Bike Caucus include Akin, Emerson, Cleaver, Clay, and Carnahan.  We would really like to get Bond, McCaskill, Luetkemeyer, Blunt, Skelton, and Graves on board!

Complete details about each of these issues and more information about these general topics is available in the League of American Bicyclists's National Bike Summit program (PDF file), starting on page 14.
