A High School Bike Club in Bakersfield, CA Encourages Biking to School
The Bakersfield Caterpillar Biking Club believes that there are alternatives to driving to school. Every morning a group of the high schoolers meet at 6:00 AM at a local bicycle shop to bike to school together. While other kids get their kicks behind the wheel of their cars, the Caterpillars are leading by example. Some members are even giving up their cars entirely for the month of May in celebration of National Bike Month.
From the article at Bakersfield.com
The school club has gotten the support of several local biking groups, including Bike Bakersfield and Safe Routes to School, a national center advocating safe ways to get to school.
Local biking officials hope to use the school's club as a pilot program for other campuses. [Other local] high schools are pushing to join the biking movement next year.
