National Bike to Church Day June 6th, 2010

The Kansas City Star is reporting:

Modeled after events encouraging people to bike to work and school, an Overland Park church has started what it hopes will be a National Bike to Church Day.

On June 6 and Aug. 29, dozens of riders will bike their way to Christ Lutheran Church (11720 Nieman Road). These will be the fifth and sixth rides for the local congregation, and organizers hope the idea will catch on with other churches.

“We recently moved toward making it a regional and national event,” says Rick Gasaway, chairman of the church’s green team. “It shows us that we can reserve resources by riding our bikes to church. It helps bring those stewardship priorities of using our resources wisely.”

The rides, which have included as many as 75 cyclists, provide a time for fellowship among church members and their families, Gasaway says. The riders get water and snacks when they arrive at church and sit in a special section during the services.
