Two Missouri communities made the National Complete Streets Coalition's November Complete Streets News:

City of Lee's Summit Adopts First Policy in Kansas City, Missouri Region
In August 2009, the Lee's Summit Strategic Plan called for establishing a Complete Streets approach to transportation projects. That goal is closer to reality now that City Council adopted a "livable streets" policy (.pdf) on November 4. The new policy applies to the design, construction, and maintenance of street projects and calls for facilities that balance the different modes and are appropriate to the community context. The future establishment of a Livable Streets Advisory Board will assist in the implementation of the policy.

Kansas City
Kansas City, MO: A draft update to the city's Major Street Plan proposes tying street designs to the community context and approaching street design from a Complete Streets standpoint to accommodate all users. Public comment is currently being accepted.

In addition, the Mid-America Regional Council (greater Kansas City metro area) has recently adopted Complete Streets policies as part of the long-range transportation plan, Transportation Outlook 2040.

Lee's Summit's adoption of Complete Streets principles (more info on here on how it was done) has really been a model communities around Missouri can follow. Not only have they adopted Complete Streets principles into their city's long range plan and now officially adopted by resolution of the city council--they have built a very broad-based and powerful grass roots coalition of community members around the idea of Complete Streets, and built ties with all sorts of community groups around the issue.

The result is that they have real momentum around Complete Streets throughout the community.  The recently passed resolution is just one more step in the community's progress--expect much more in the future.

Complete Streets in Missouri
Missouri now has ten municipalities or agencies that have adopted Complete Streets policies--five of them in 2010.

Seven cities have adopted Complete Streets policies (Columbia, De Soto, Ferguson, Crystal City, St. Louis, Festus, and Lee's Summit).

Three Councils of Governments in Missouri (Metropolitan Planning Organizations and Regional Planning Commissions) have adopted Complete Streets policies: The East-West Gateway Council of Governments (St Louis region), the St Joseph Area Transportation Study Organization, and the Mid-America Regional Council.

Increasing the number of Complete Streets policies in Missouri is one of the top goals in MoBikeFed's Vision for Bicycling and Walking in Missouri.
