Herculaneum, Missouri, adopts Complete Streets policy

Here's a bit of good news--Herculaneum, Missouri, has adopted a Complete Streets policy.

Counting Herculaneum, Missouri now has 11 cities and agencies that have adopted Complete Streets policy in one form or another.  That's up from just 5 cities/agencies at the end of 2009.

Credit must go to Complete Streets Crystal City-Festus and the Jefferson County Health Department, both of which have done an excellent job of educating area officials about Complete Streets.  PedNet has acted as a consultant with the Health Department in its effort to promote Complete Streets in the area.  Missouri Livable Streets recently held an advocacy training in the area.

With Crystal City, Festus, Herculaneum, and De Soto, all in Jefferson County, all adopting Complete Streets policies recently--as well as St Louis City, the East-West Gateway Council of Governments, and Ferguson just to the north--the area is starting to look like one of the hot spots for Complete Streets in the multi-state region.

Increasing the number and effectiveness of Complete Streets Policies across Missouri is one of the key goals of MoBikeFed's Vision of Bicycling and Walking in Missouri.

MoDOT has been tracking Missourians attitudes towards accommodating bicycling and walking, and their current research shows that a majority of Missourians support inclusion of bicycle and pedestrian facilities in projects--even if the cost is up to 25% of the project, and even if doing so diverts funds from other projects.
