Complete Streets Resolution, Bicycle/Pedestrian Holidays Bill well positioned to pass during final week of Missouri legislative session
Here is the latest from the Missouri General Assembly--with just one week left to go in this year's legislative session.
Complete Streets Resolution
HCR 23, the Missouri Complete Streets Resolution, passed the Senate Rules Committee at a hearing Tuesday.
Senator Bob Dixon |
|
Rep. Mike Cierpiot introduced the resolution (Cierpiot has stepped in to handle the resolution since resolution sponsor Rep. Sally Faith won election as Mayor of St. Charles and has resigned her office in the General Assembly). Brent Hugh of the Missouri Bicycle & Pedestrian Federation and Scott McSwain of LISC testified in favor of the resolution. No one spoke in opposition.
Senator Bob Dixon of Springfield has agreed to handle HCR 23 on the floor of the Senate. The Resolution is now on the Senate Resolutions calendar, which means it is almost certain to come to a vote on the floor of the Missouri Senate next week, during the final week of Missouri's legislative session. Next step is the Governor's desk for a final signature.
The timing is good, as the National Complete Streets Coalition release a report last week naming Missouri's Complete Streets policies as among the top in the nation. The number of Complete Streets policies in Missouri has tripled in the past twelve months, and over three million Missourians are now covered by a Complete Streets policy.
However, Missouri lacks a statewide statement of support for Complete Streets and HCR 23 will help fill that gap.
Previous news about HCR 23, and full text of the Resolution, is here.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Holidays Bill
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Holidays Bill, SB 180 sponsored by Senator Will Kraus of Lee's Summit, and handled by Representative Noel Torpey, also of Lee's Summit, has passed its final committee vote in the House Rules Committee and has a chance to pass during the final week of the Missouri legislative session.

Rep. Noel Torpey |
Next step is the House Rules Committee and then a vote on the floor of the full House.
The bill officially adds Bicycle Month (May), Bike to Work Week, Bike to Work Day as well as Walk and Bicycle to School Month, Week, and Day (October) to Missouri's Holiday Calendar.
