Sample resolution declaring May 13-17, 2013 Bike Week in a Missouri city or county.

Use or adapt this resolution to have Bike Month (May), Bike to Work Day (3rd Friday in May), Bike to Work Week (the week of Bike to Work Day), or the NEW Bike to School Day (2nd Wednesday in May) officially declared in your city, county--or other organization or agency.

Declaring May 13-17, 2013, as Bike Week.

WHEREAS, the City of XXXX, Missouri encourages the increased use of the bicycle, benefiting all citizens of XXXX by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing the use of and dependence upon finite energy sources, and fostering exercise; and

WHEREAS, the City of XXXX, Missouri recognizes the bicycle as a legitimate roadway vehicle and therefore is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roadway facilities in Missouri except where prohibited by law; and

WHEREAS, the City of XXXX, Missouri recognizing the use of bicycles as a viable mode of transportation, endeavors to promote safe and responsible bicycling and is committed to incorporating the development of bicycle facilities in the vision for revitalizing downtown XXXX and supporting livable neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, the League of American Bicyclists and the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation have established May as National Bicycle Month and Missouri Bicycle Month and the Mayor, City Council and LIST YOUR LOCAL BICYCLE AND BICYCLE ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS establishes May as Bicycle Safety Month in XXXX; and

WHEREAS, the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation, the Mayor, City Council and LIST YOUR LOCAL BICYCLE AND BICYCLE ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS encourage all citizens to ride their bicycles to work, to the store, to the park, around their neighborhoods and with friends and family to promote the personal and societal benefits achieved from bicycling; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF XXXX:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May 13-17, 2013, as “Bike Week” in the City of XXXX, Missouri.
