Carthage will become a more "bicycle friendly" city under a measure advanced this week by the Carthage City Council.

The council gave preliminary approval to an agreement with the state that will lead to development of a system of bicycle paths on city streets to city schools, athletic complexes and other sites.

"The goal is to establish a series of bicycle paths that will tie in to the Walnut Bottoms and Ruby Jack trails, schools and recreation sites in the city, so residents can get around safely, without using cars," said Tom Short, city administrator.
