The council also approved a change order that will move up the creation of shared bike lanes that will connect existing ways along Route 66, particularly in parts of Ward 1 that see relatively high bike traffic. Shared lanes, marked by “sharrows,” indicate stretches of road where cyclists and motor vehicles must share the available pavement. Tom Short, city administrator, said that a favorable construction contract for the bike lane project had cut its overall cost by 42 percent. The project was included in the 2015 master plan.
