I first want to acknowledge that the city council and city employees have spent considerable time and effort to improve bicycling in Warrensburg.

The council responded positively to a petition that was brought to them four years ago by the Citizens for Environmental Action to make Warrensburg a safer place for bicyclists and walkers. As a result of the petition, the City Council established the Bicycling and Pedestrian Task Force; council has passed a resolution stating that they will take the needs of bicyclist and walkers into consideration in new street improvements and housing developments; and they have provided stencils and paint for sharrows, share the roads emblems, on streets.

The Spirit Trail project is a wonderful opportunity for the city to become a visiting place and a destination for bicyclists who want to use the trail – visitors who camp at Knob Noster State Park and come here on the trail, or visitors who come here by car or train to ride to other destinations. The trail will also be a wonderful asset to the businesses of our city as travelers come into town from the trail for food, accommodations and activities.

In my opinion, it’s time for the city to move ahead fairly quickly to make our streets more bicycle-friendly. This will have economic rewards as well as health, recreational, and environmental rewards.
