100 Missouri Miles: Steve hikes the Katy Trail | #100MoMiles

I first took an interest in hiking during my time in the Boy Scouts between fifteen and twenty years ago. During that time, I was able to hike many of the shorter trails around Missouri, particularly around the camps we stayed at. In following years, I started going on longer and longer hikes, to the point where a backpack was necessary to carry everything I needed on the trail.

I’ve found it helpful to carry a backpack if you intend on hiking more than a few miles. It’s helpful when you need to carry extra water, food, and emergency supplies.

With training and the proper gear, backpackers can travel for days at a time, covering huge distances. In this time, backpackers are able to take in incredible sights from Forest Lake on the Thousand Hills Trail just outside Kirksville - to the diverse landscapes and wildlife along all 230 miles of the Ozark Trail.

For this trip, I planned a route that would be a bit longer than normal for a single day, totaling over 15 miles round trip, however traveling on a flat, well maintained course like the Katy Trail meant I could travel faster and longer since there aren’t as many obstacles along the way.
