More than 50 civic and community leaders attended the Spirit Trail symbolic groundbreaking Tuesday on Route DD.

Construction begins Aug. 28, contractor Chris Hendren, Buildet LLC, Nevada, said.

The groundbreaking came five years after Warrensburg, Johnson County, Whiteman Air Force Base, University of Central Missouri and Pioneer Trails Regional Planning Commission officials started efforts to complete the trail between Warrensburg and Whiteman.

Johnson County Presiding Commissioner Bill Gabel, the Spirit Trail Coalition chairman, said the group first hoped the trail would be completed in eight to 10 years, but the Missouri Department of Transportation sped the process.
