From the first protected bike lanes to more bike boxes and new bike racks, the City is making progress toward being a more bicycle friendly community. The City is leveraging $2.3 million in federal transportation funds with local capital improvement funds for several on-street bike facilities. While the City has encountered some hurdles getting bids within budget, the City continues to work diligently to identify creative solutions to complete these important projects.

Planned Bikeway Projects (last updated Feb. 2018)

Downtown Loop – This is a much anticipated and talked about project, adding bike facilities using Grand Boulevard as the spine of the project and connecting seven neighborhoods into downtown. The Grand Boulevard portion of this project was completed in fall 2017. Work on the second phase of the project will continue in Spring 2018. Armour/Benton Boulevard Bikeway – This bike-way through midtown and the city’s east side is another much anticipated project, and will mark the City’s first protected bike lanes. The city is currently in the process of awarding the contract to complete this work with the hopes of a spring 2018 start. Here are design plans for the bike facilities Armour Boulevard Bikeway Plans and Benton Boulevard Bikeway Plans.

Paseo Boulevard – Independence Ave south to 85th Street. This project will add 19 lane miles of on-street bikeways making the longest continuous facility in the region and possibly the country. Public meetings are being planned for spring 2018. The goal will be to work closely with the neighborhoods and stakeholders to design an innovative bikeway.

Lexington/Gladstone – This 6.6 lane mile project will wind through several Northeast neighborhoods from Woodland to Lexington and Gladstone and is currently in the design process. Staff is working with stakeholders and will hold public meetings to get input on the design this fall.

Charlotte/Holmes – E 25th Street to E 36th Street. This project will add 2.5 lane miles of bikeways on both Charlotte and Holmes connecting downtown to midtown and is currently in the RFQ process. The downtown segments added a combination of dedicated bike lanes and shared lane markings as part of the street resurfacing program. The goal will be to work closely with the neighborhoods and stakeholders to design the bikeway corridor on these one-way pairs.

New KC Bicycle Parking Racks
Efforts are underway to install a hundred new KC branded bike racks around the City. The federally funded racks were installed all around the City in multiple business districts.
