Waterloo police start bike patrol
STLToday has an article about Waterloo's new bicycle patrol officers:
"I noticed on the bike, you notice more business signs, keep in closer contact with the public," she said. "I thought it would be something I'd enjoy and, for a short time, I did."
The idea of bicycle police patrol is new to Waterloo, but not to law enforcement. A bike-mounted officer is better able to maneuver in crowd situations and to navigate in traffic.
"This special unit is designed to increase patrol for neighborhoods, enhance community relations and gain public support," Chief Joe Brauer said. "The COPP unit will also work in conjunction with the Neighborhood Watch Program that was organized in mid 2003."
