Capitol Day: Five good things that happened yesterday because of Capitol Day
Submitted by Brent Hugh on Wed, 01/26/2011 - 4:37pm
Bicycle & Pedestrian Day at the Capitol hasn't even happened yet--and already things are happening because dozens of citizens like you are planning to visit Jefferson City Tuesday.
Because Capitol Day is happening Tuesday, here are five good things that happened yesterday:
- Rep. Sally Faith of St Charles agreed to sponsor the Complete Streets Resolution in the House--it's been introduced as HCR 23.
- Senator Will Kraus of Lee's Summit introduced a Bicycle & Pedestrian Holidays bill, SB 180--with a possibility of having a hearing on it at 8:15am right on Capitol Day
- Senator Kraus is also locating a House sponsor for the bill.
- Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder agreed to issue a Lieutenant Governor's declaration in support of Complete Streets.
- The Missouri Safe Routes to School Network will have a delegation at Capitol Day to educate legislators about the Safe Routes to School movement in Missouri.
In addition:
- Senator Kurt Schaefer of Columbia has agreed to introduce a Capitol Day delegation on the floor of the Senate February 1st
- Rep. David Sater of Cassville has introduced the Safe Passing of Bicycles bill, HB 33, which puts a minimum distance for passing bicyclists at 3 feet and fixes three other technical problems with the current safe passing provision.
- Senator Ryan McKenna's bill banning text messaging while driving (SB 11) has advanced in the Senate.
- Trailnet is organizing a vanpool to Capitol Day from St Louis (for more info, contact John Cameron, john@trailnet.org)
- PedNet (Columbia) is bringing a large delegation, including about a dozen young bike club members
Hope to see you at Capitol Day, too!
