Press Release: MoBikeFed Releases Walk/Bike to School Savings Calculator

Released September 28th, 2011

Thousands of Missouri schoolchildren will be walking and biking to school during Walk to School Month (October) and on International Walk to School Day (Wed, Oct 5th)

"Walking and biking to school is one of the best ways to keep kids healthy, happy, and performing well in school," said Brent Hugh, Executive Director of the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation.

"We've known this for a long time, but we now we can can see the numbers in an easy-to-use online calculator."

The Walk/Bike to School Savings Calculator is online at

The calculator shows that a child who bikes a mile to and from school every day will bike a distance longer than a trip across Missouri and saves over 600 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions in a year.

A child who walks half a mile to and from school daily saves over 20 pounds of pollutants (other than CO2) and receives benefits and savings of almost $1800 over the course of a year.

"We encourage every family to try walking or biking to school during National Walk to School Month--and see the savings and benefits it brings to your family," said Hugh.
