Columbia's mayor kicks off week of biking & walking

The Columbia Tribune reports:
If you see more kids outside than usual next week, credit the Third Annual Mayor’s Challenge: Bike, Walk and Wheel Week, which begins tomorrow and ends May 16.

More than 100 children from Columbia Catholic School and innumerable children from Columbia elementary schools will be walking to school rather than being driven by parents or taking the bus. Pupils in local schools have been especially encouraged to take part in this year’s events.

"The idea is, if we get the kids, we’ll get the adults too," said Judy Knudson, the event’s coordinator. "Missouri is so high in" the incidence of "obesity and Type 2 diabetes in children. It disturbs me that children spend so much time inside. Kids used to go outside and play. But that’s changed a lot in the last 15 years. We see this as an opportunity to get them to get involved."
